Doing the back deck

Wow! This weekend was COLD in Melbourne town. Brrrr..  I had to get the ice off my car window this morning and froze watching my son play Footy this morning. Yesterday, during the morning and early afternoon, the weather was more tolerable, so Heidi helped me start oiling the bottom and sides of the decking boards.

We used this.
Dave painted all the joists black as required by our surveyor to protect from the weather and water sitting on the joists. We just used Wattyl Solargaurd.
Then he started laying them. Didn't get very far though because we ran out of room to layout the boards for painting. But we got this many done (sorry for the bad photo) and during the week I will try to paint more.
Not much on this week. It is school holidays so I guess I will be entertaining the kids on my days off rather than renovating. Hopefully though we get the next cabinet quote in during the week.

Cheers,
Nat

My beautiful vanity

My goodness, where did the weekend go? I think I blinked and missed it. Friday night, the surveyor came and gave us the ok on the deck frame. Phew! Poor Dave had to work on Saturday so he didn't get any work done on our house. He spent all day today doing the scribers on the outside windows out the back and in the blind sideway.

But the most exciting part was that the drawers were finished off for our ensuite vanity. I just need to pick some handles now and it is pretty much done. However, at some stage we still need to put a dado rail along the top of the tiles.

Here are some of the scribers on the outside windows. It really finishes off the architraves so professionally and no spaces for spiders to hide behind.

I have been thinking ahead to when we will need to buy a dining table. I spied this one in Harvey Norman today and although it is too big, I really liked the table.
The finish on the top looked really nice and rustic, but it was so nice and smooth and would be easy to wipe down. I might have to find out if they do a smaller one.

On Tuesday, we have a guy coming out to take a look at the cabinetry we need for the laundry, kitchen and then all the drawers and wardrobes that we need. We already got one quote and it was about $10k which I didn't think was too bad, but if this guys cane do it cheaper, I wont complain. If he could, then we could get nicer counter tops and change the existing kitchen doors.

Cheers,
Nat

Bits and pieces

Hello, how's it going? Winter has set in now and I am enjoying the little luxuries I am allowed in winter. Like hot teas full of delishious spices, scrummt toasted sandwiches and hot chocolates in front of the fire. I even bought a kit of S'mores for the first time to try on the weekend.

Last weekend I didn't do a thing on the reno as I had Mum visiting from Tassie and staying in Heidi's room. So we spent time with her. However, David did get a few things done. He worked on the back deck and some window trim and skirting around the pillars under the stairs.

More window canopy.
This afternoon at 4pm, the surveyor is coming around to do the inspection on the deck frame. Then if that passes and when the new boards have acclimatised, we can lay the deck!! Woo hoo!

We are still waiting to hear back from a cabinet maker about the laundry and other cabinets that we need made. Why must people be so slow?

Anyway, happy weekend everyone,
Nat

Deck ceiling

Ok so the ceiling over the back deck took longer than expected. But considering how long it took us to do the living room ceiling, we should be surprised.
It does look good though. Still need to do the edging though.

Therefore, we didn't do any work on the actual deck. Hopefully get some more framing done during the week. But here are some of the boards laying out.
And this is the whole picture at the moment.
Tonight we should put in the order for the new kitchen window.

Cheers,
Nat

Another ceiling

So winter has arrived in Melbourne and our desire to hibernate and enjoy hot chocolates around the fireplace is growing. However, there is still some work getting done around the house. We try to do bits are pieces when we get a chance. Like, while the roast chicken was in the oven on Tuesday evening, I painted another coat of black satin paint on the laundry door. Then after dinner Dave did some gapping between skirting boards and architraves in preparation for painting.

We had a delivery of timber too. This is the Mahogany decking boards for the back deck. Maybe we will get some of these down on the weekend.

During the week after work, Dave also managed to get some of the lining boards up on the ceiling above the deck. This is going to look so nice once it is done. I think I might even have a try of spray painting this.
We are still trying to get hold of Dave's brother who was meant to put the drawers on the bathroom vanity but he is hiding apparently. Don't blame him, he he.

Cheers,
Nat
